by Joseph Bruchac (5th+)

At the age of eleven, Sonny can’t predict when his father’s rage will turn on him and his mother. Lately his father just seems to be very angry about everything, especially his job at the mill. His main support through everything is his uncle Louis, a great man who takes him and his mother on visits to Vermont and helps with household things while Sonny’s father is working. The family is hiding a secret, which is part of the anger from Sonny’s father. Will Sonny ever learn the family secret and help bring his family away from the anger, shame and hurt?
