Mattie loved to work with inventing things. When she was just a young girl she would plan and invent things to help her mother and her two brothers. She began by creating kites and sleds. However, when she began working in a factory to earn some more money for her family, there was an accident. A young girl that she knew was injured by a flying machine part. This would not do. So Mattie took it upon herself to invent something to prevent these flying machine parts.
